NHL – Defending champions Washington Capitals kicked off the 2018-2019 season by humiliating the Boston Bruins 7-0.
Washington Capitals, winners of the last Stanley Cup, kicked off the 2018-19 North American Ice Hockey League (NHL) season with style on Wednesday, humiliating the Boston Bruins 7-0. Capitals captain and star striker Alex Ovechkin participated in the festival with a goal and a assist, while his compatriot Evgeny Kuznetsov scored twice. Washington goalkeeper Braden Holtby made 25 saves and was undefeated, his first regular season game without conceding a goal since April 2017.
His Boston counterpart, Finland’s Tuukka Rask, had a nightmare evening: he conceded five goals out of 19 shots and was replaced by Czech Jaroslav Halak, who was unable to prevent the Bruins’ worst defeat in their history in an opening match.
Before the meeting, as tradition has it, the Capitals unveiled the banner hanging on the ceiling of their rink celebrating the first title in their history. Players and coaches were presented, in another tradition of North American professional sports, with an imposing ring in memory of their historic 2017-18 season. Last June, Ovechkin and his teammates won the supreme title by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights (4-1) in the final. They have since lost their coach Barry Trotz, recruited by the New York Islanders and replaced by his assistant Todd Reirden. Tom Wilson participated in the pre-game ceremony, but the Canadian winger will miss his team’s first 20 games after being suspended for a heavy suspension following a dangerous check by a St. Louis player during a preparation game on Sunday.
